Description

This 12-week, hands-on training is designed to transform how crime analysts approach their work by combining productivity strategies, automation, AI, and advanced Excel and workflow techniques. Analysts will learn to streamline repetitive tasks, optimize daily processes, and integrate AI tools, Excel, Outlook, Word, and pre-built templates to generate actionable, real-world solutions.

The course goes beyond traditional crime analysis techniques by addressing the root causes of inefficiency, teaching participants to prioritize high-value tasks, automate administrative and analytical workflows, and build dynamic dashboards and reports. Each module includes practical exercises and real-world scenarios that can be applied immediately to daily work, enabling analysts to free up time for deeper analysis, enhance collaboration with law enforcement teams, and future-proof their skills for an AI-driven future.

Please note that you do not need a specific version of Microsoft Office to participate in the class.

Overall learning objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Prioritize high-value analytical tasks and optimize daily processes to increase efficiency in law enforcement operations.
  • Analyze and streamline workflows by automating repetitive administrative and analytical tasks in a law enforcement environment.
  • Apply AI tools, Excel, and pre-built templates to generate actionable solutions that support investigative and operational needs.
  • Design and build dynamic dashboards and reports to support operational and strategic decision-making.
  • Apply automation strategies to real-world law enforcement scenarios, including custom templates, automated alerts, and report generation.
  • Reduce manual data processing to free time for deeper analysis and enhance collaboration with law enforcement personnel.

Format

This is an intermediate-level course designed for analysts who already have a foundational understanding of crime analysis and Excel. It is recommended that students have a minimum of 2–3 years of experience in a law enforcement analysis role or have successfully completed the Fundamentals of Crime Analysis course. Participants should be comfortable with basic crime analysis concepts and able to navigate essential Excel functions such as sorting, filtering, and simple formulas. These skills ensure students can fully engage with the automation, workflow optimization, AI, and advanced Excel techniques taught in this course.

Students should expect to dedicate approximately 3–5 hours per week to this course. Each class uses a structured but flexible format: students move through the material one week at a time as a group, and while there are no live meetings, you may complete each week’s activities whenever it fits your schedule. The course is graded pass/fail, and steady participation throughout the 12 weeks is required. To ensure instructors can provide timely, meaningful feedback, large end-of-term submissions are not accepted unless arranged with the instructor in advance.

Invitations to the learning platform will be sent the week before class starts. Each week, students will engage with required self-paced activities, participate in discussion forums, and have access to optional materials for deeper exploration if desired. The instructor will provide regular guidance and feedback through the IACA homework submission platform to support your learning journey.
